Mi Casa: Mis Succulents

Sadly, I do not have a pet to love. Someday we'll have a really cutie little puppy to snuggle with... for now I have my plants. We do not snuggle but I love them anyway. I have fantastic luck with succulents... they're about the only thing I can't destroy, which is probably why I love them so. I like to buy them from Exotic Gardens on El Cajon Blvd. I've been really into making little succulent arrangements for presents lately. Here are a couple of my arrangements~

The other day I decided to try my hand at a succulent terrarium. I filled the bottom of my $3 bowl from Michael's with a bag of $1 black rocks (also from Michael's) and I had one of those 40% off coupons for one item so the whole thing was basically $4... cheaper than a footlong and way prettier to boot. On top of the rocks I packed in a few inches of potting soil. I've read that you should add a layer of activated carbon in between the stones and soil to help keep things dry and avoid a mildewy smell. Bags of activated carbon cost about $10 and I'm cheap so I figured I'd just keep an eye on the soil and make sure I'm not overwatering. Besides, the stones should help keep things drained enough. I used clippings from plants in my yard and there you have it~

These are definitely going to be my new homemade gift of choice!
